図書館で借りた本の返却期限を延長する英語表現——renew・due date・extendの実践演習ガイド

最も迷いやすいのが renew と extend の使い分けです。

図書館は日数を自由に延ばすのではなく「貸出サイクルを丸ごと更新（renew）する」仕組みが基本です。窓口で本を差し出し「延長したい」と言うときは、“Can I renew this book?” が最も自然です。
extend を使う場合は本を直接置かず、“extend the loan period”（貸出期間を延ばす）や “extend the due date”（期日を延ばす）と表現します。

2. 「due date」と「deadline」の使い分け

• due（形容詞）：返却期日になって。「When is it due?（期日はいつ？）」
• due date（名詞）：返却期日。「What is the due date?（返却期限日は何日ですか？）」
• deadline（名詞）：仕事の納期や提出締切。物の返却には due date を使います。

3. 語彙・重要表現の深掘り解説

• renew / automatic renewal：renew a book（本を延長する）。予約がない限り自動で更新する automatic renewal の仕組みを使う図書館もあります。仕組みは館ごとに確かめます。
• extend the loan / due date：期間を延ばす際は extend the loan [period]、期日を延ばす際は extend the due date。差分は by（by one week）、期間は for（for two weeks）を用います。
• due date / overdue fee：be due on [日付]、be due by [時刻]。overdue は「延滞した」を表す形容詞、overdue fee は延滞料。grace period（猶予期間）も重要です。
