The rules for the flag
Article 22 of the Basic Law, Germany’s constitution, says that “the federal flag is black, red and gold”.
The shape is set by a federal order (1996): three horizontal stripes of equal width, black at the top, red in the middle and gold at the bottom, with a height-to-length ratio of 3 to 5.

The area is 357,581 km², the 61st largest of the 193. That is about the same as Japan’s area.
